Alexandria is situated on the West Verge of the Nile Delta between the Mediterranean Sea and Mariut Lake. It is considered the second most important city and the main port in Egypt. It handlesover three quarters of Egypt’s foreign trade. Alexandria port consists of two harbors (East and West) separated by a T-shaped peninsula. The first part is for general cargo and the second part is for wood and bulk trade, and the East harbor is shallow and is not used in navigation. The Westharbor is used for commercial shipping. The harbor is formed by two converging breakwaters.



The First Zone :
It extends from maritime force borders up to gate number 2 customs. It consists of many maritime quays starting from quay 1 up to quay 14/16 of length 1734.9 m

The Second Zone :
Is situated between berths 16 and 28 deals with 4 types of activities: unified cargoes including RoRo, passengers' terminal, stuffed bulk cargoes, and barge discharge.

The Third Zone :
It is located between berth 35 and the end of the military berth 47. New buildings were established after the development. The type of handled cargo in this area is general cargo.

The Fourth Zone :
Is located between berths 49 and 67, and is used for handling containers, cement, coal, barge discharge carrying general cargo, fertilizers, and general cargo.

The Fifth Zone :
The borders of this area extend from gate no.36 customs with petroleum dock border including maritime berths from zone 71(a) and 85/2, and is used for handling: molasses, timber, some types of general cargoes, barge discharge, grains and flour.

The Sixth Zone (Oil Dock) :
Is situated at the western boundaries of the port, encompasses oil berths 87/1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and is used for handling edible oil, oil products and for providing bunkers. It also includes berth 86 situated at the port’s limits, used for handling livestock. The ports does not include oil storage facilities, but oil berths are connected to a refinery through a 2 km. long pipeline , no main terminals, store houses and yards are found in the sixth zone.

The port is protected by sea stuns, and two converging breakwaters. The entrance breadth is 400m. Approximately. The port is divided into two harbors separated by coal berths and the inner breakwater. The first harbor is called the inner dock and the second harbor is called the outer harbor with a water area of 600 hectares. The first harbor is used for handling general cargo while the second harbor is used for oil and bulk cargo traffic. Pilotage is compulsory for vessels arriving and departing the port. The approach area is 3nm away from the straight entrance, and its depth varies from 30-35 m and the average water density is 1.3g/cm3.



Pilotage is compulsory for all types of vessels except that of tonnage less than 300 tons. Pilots board in the designated waiting area to pilot the ship inside to the outer harbor anchorage area, through fairways, inside the inner anchorage area and throughout maneuverings.



Tugboats are available at the Alexandria port (vessels with length less than 275 ft. are not tugged).

Breakwater to protect the port from widespread waves progressing from the North West 2250 m. long. The breakwater extends from Agamy throughout the several natural island, and consists of concrete – reinforced stones. The breakwater Chart datum varies from 2.77 m. to 5.8 m., reaches a depth between 10, 14 and the side sloping is 2 : 1



It follows the regulations of Alexandria Port except Sumid units.



It follows the regulations for all ships whose tonnage exceeds 2000 tons.


Port Description & Location

Port Said port is situated on the Northern entrance of the Gulf of Suez. It is considered one of the main Egyptian ports due to its distinguished location at the crossroad of the most important world sea trade route between the East and Europe via Suez Canal, and the most extensive transshipment port in the world.

The port is bordered, seaward, by an imaginary line extending 0.5 N.M. from the western breakwater boundary till the eastern breakwater end. And from the Suez Canal area, it is bordered by an imaginary line extending transversely from the southern bank of the Canal connected to Manzala Lake, and the railways arcade livestock.

Approach Area

Breakwaters Two breakwaters protect the port entrance channel: the western breakwater is about 3.5 miles long, and the eastern breakwater is about 1.5 miles long.

Dwelling Area

The Suez Canal dwelling area is situated between latitudes 31 21 N and 31 25 N and longitudes 32 16.2 E and 32 20.6 E, where vessels awaiting to enter Port-Said Port stay, whether to join the North convoy to cross the Suez Canal to carry out stevedoring operations or to be supplied with provisions and bunkers. 

The dwelling area is divided into two sections:

- The Northern Area: located between latitudes 31 23.4 N and 31 24.8 N and longitudes 32 16.2 E and 32 20.2 E, allocated for vessels with deep drafts.
- The Southern Area: located between latitudes 31 21.3 N and 31 22 N and longitudes 32 16.2 E and 32 20.6 E, allocated for all vessel types.


Pilotage is compulsory in Port-Said Port, and it is performed by the Suez Canal Authority, in return for fixed fees.

East Port Said Port has a distinguished location east of the Northern entrance of the Suez Canal, at the confluence of three continents, and at the crossroad of the most important world sea trade route between the East and the west.

The port is bordered from the North by the Mediterranean Sea, from South by the industrial zone, from East by El-Malaha Lake, and from the Western verge of Suez Canal inside the frontiers of Port Said Province.

Damietta Port is situated 10.5 km. west of the Nile river of Damietta branch westward Ras El-Bar, and 70 km. away from Port Said Port. The port installations extend on an area of 11.8 sq. Km. The port is bordered by an imaginary line connecting the eastern and western external breakwaters.

Geographical Overview

Entrance Channel :
11.4 km. long, 15 m. deep, and 300 m. wide gradually decreasing to reach 250 m. at the breakwater fringe, the approach channel is bordered by 18 nightly-lit buoys.

Breakwaters :
The western breakwater is 1640 m. long with 140 m. land-based and 1500 m. sea-based area. The eastern breakwater is 750 m. long with 200 m. land-based and 550 sea-based area. Both breakwaters are made of stacked artificial acrobod piles topped with a concrete head.

Barge Channel :
The barge channel consists of two sections; one is 1350 m. long connecting the barge dock to the sea and the other is 3750 m. connecting the basin to the Nile branch. The barge dock area is 250x250 m comprising a 250 m. long, 5m. deep quay.

Turning Dock :
The turning dock diameter is 500 m. with 14.5 m. depth at the container berth, and 12 m. depth at the general cargo berth.

Pilotage is compulsory. Pilotage charges are payable in accordance with decree 60/1988 (concerning Egyptian vessels) and decree 73/1988 (concerning foreign vessels). Transshipment Containers are accorded 20-50% reduction according to decree 40/1990. Container carriers transiting the Egyptian ports are accorded 75% reduction.

Approach Area

Vessels usually berth at the dwelling area. Dredging of the fairway at new Sakhra port and the coastal cape has rendered water depth consistent, estimated at 11.28 m. During tide, vessels up to 11.25 m. draft can approach the harbor during the flow taking the consideration that the draft not exceeding 12.19 m


Pilotage is compulsory, and it is monitored though radio (VHF – H/F) and electronic equipment (Radar Beacon).
